WHO WE ARE
Teachers Unify to End Gun Violence is a grassroots movement of educators and school staff across America who are raising their voices to demand safety from gun violence in our communities. By “educators” we mean all school folks current/retired/former who support, guide, teach children, and keep them safe.
Teachers Unify was founded in the wake of the Oxford High School shooting in Michigan on November 30, 2021 by three public school teachers and American Federation of Teachers (AFT) members: Abbey Clements, Sarah Lerner, and Sari Beth Rosenberg. Two of the co-founders survived two of the worst of America’s school shootings – Sandy Hook Elementary School, Newtown, CT, in 2012 (Abbey) and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Parkland, FL, in 2018 (Sarah). With over 75 years of teaching experience among them, the founders intend Teachers Unify to fill a gap in the national dialogue around gun violence that has too long excluded teachers.
OUR VALUES
COMMITMENT
We are dedicated to the safety and well-being of educators, school staff, students and families everywhere. By building relationships and centering our work on survivors, we bring the diligence all educators practice to this movement with fidelity.
BOLD, EXPANSIVE INCLUSIVITY
We welcome the voices of all school-based personnel, current, future, former, and retired. Our strength is the diversity of our advocates who speak out, in a multitude of ways, for the safety of all children and adults in every community.
TRAUMA-INFORMED WORK
We are committed to promoting trauma-informed plans to help gun violence survivors by working with properly trained professionals and evidence-based strategies.
EDUCATION
We are classroom teachers and school staff dedicated to educating communities on how to self-advocate by sharing our experiences connected to the fear, trauma, and healing related to gun violence.
LISTENING
We listen to those who have survived gun violence in their schools & communities, as well as to those who support students through trauma, lockdown drills, and real events.
AMPLIFYING
We work to amplify the voices, testimonies, and shared experiences of those who make up the tapestry of trauma as related to gun violence.
